Northern Teens come from behind to clinch Inaugural Championship

Updated: Oct 11, 2023

The Northern Teens FC made a late comeback to stun the Central Amoana FC by a 2-1 full-time score to claim the 2023 Inaugural National Youth Soccer League (NYSL) Championship on Saturday, October 7th, at PNG Football Stadium in Port Moresby.

The two teams went hard against each other in the opening 20 minutes of the contest. With a few minutes left before the halftime break, the Central Amoana FC opened up the game with a goal to take a 1-0 lead over the Northern Teens FC. The exciting teenage footballers rose to the occasion, showcasing an entertaining first half of football.

In the second half, the Morobean lads swung the momentum in their favor. With more ball possession and field territory, the Teens scored an equalizer in the 65th minute. The arm wrestle continued until in the dying minutes of the game, the visitors scored a match-winner and sent the jubilant crowd into a frenzy, sealing off the deal in a grandstand finish.

The Central lads put up a good fight, but their finishes were poor. The Northern Teens capitalized on Amoana’s silly errors and made them pay the price. The sleek passes, dribbling skills, and general plays for both sides were scintillating to watch. They delivered a money’s worth performance.

The elated Northern Teens coach, Emmanuel Airem said even though they were trailing by a 1-point at halftime, he encouraged his boys to stick to the game plan and compete strongly. The players listened to their coach’s advice and executed the game plan well in the second half, scoring 2 unanswered goals to pull off an upset.

“These boys are consistent in their performance. Although they were down by 1 point, I had confidence in them to put in a strong performance in the second half, and they just did that. I am very happy for the boys,” coach Airem exclaimed.
