The Morobe Rugby Union (MRU) competition commenced its 2025 proper season (round 1) on Saturday, May 31st, at Lae Scrum Oval.
This year’s competition will feature 6 Premier Men’s teams, 8 A-Grades, 6 Open Women’s, and 8 U20 Boys competing for the top honors in their respective divisions, with finals scheduled in September.
Last year’s men’s premiers, the Irok Pirates, aim to defend their title while the premiership heavyweights, the Hornibrooks Harlequins and Consort Royals, are eager to steal the title from the sea rovers.
The women’s division current champions Harlequins look to go back-to-back, while last year’s runners-up Royals hope to take revenge on the jesters of Scrum Oval, with other teams aiming to fight for the coveted trophy.
MRU President Lionel Kamiak said they had introduced an U20 division this season and he anticipated a tough competition from the participating teams this year.
“We expect a good outcome from all divisions building up from last year’s competition,” Kamiak stated.
“With the inclusion of U20 boys, we are working closely with SCRUM to deliver this division.”
Mr. Kamiak acknowledged the support of Lae City Authority and Lae MP, Honorable John Rosso, including the backing of other business houses.
“I would like to thank our major sponsor LCA, under the leadership of DPM John Rosso, for their ongoing support in the last four years,” Kamiak said.
“I also extend my thank you to other sponsors like TWM PNG Ltd, PNG Ports Corporation, and SCRUM.”
President Kamiak and his executive team are confident of delivering a successful and memorable season this year.
Meanwhile, former Queensland Reds great Aidan Toua was in attendance to witness the official launch of the 2025 Morobe Rugby Union competition.
