Mioks bounced back into the winner’s circle with a strong performance

The EPG Enga Mioks have defeated the EMK Sepik Pride with a 22-6 victory in their round 15 clash of the Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup at the Santos National Football Stadium on Saturday the 29th of July, 2023.

Mioks wasted no time and scored the first try in the 5th minute through Rimbi Henry, who showed brute strength and managed to swerve past a couple of defenders to score the 4-pointer. The five-eight slotted the conversion successfully and gave his side a 6-0 lead.

After a few minutes later, Mioks scored their second try through the winger, Joel William, who grounded the ball close to the side line. The try came off of an excellent set play and ball execution. The conversion was unsuccessful, leaving the scoreline 10-0.

The high-flying Engan lads scored their third long-range try, as the winger made a quick tap on the 20-meter line and ran past a couple of defenders and placed a perfect grubber kick, which saw the strike center Kevin Yako, racing through to scoop up the ball and scored right under the uprights. With an easy conversion, Mioks extended their lead to 16-0.

Right on the stroke of half-time, Rimbi Henry bagged his second try from a quick short-side play. The short-side play took the defenders off-guard. The conversion was nailed successfully and Mioks took a handy 22-0 over Pride at the break.

The momentum swung in Pride’s favor in the second half. They were dominating ball possession and field territory but failed to turn those try scoring opportunities into points. They struggled to penetrate through Mioks’ impregnable defence.

However, the second-rower of Pride broke through the tiring defenders of Mioks in the middle and accelerated from the 40-meter line to score an individual brilliant try under the posts. The conversion was successfully added, leaving the scoreline 22-6.

Pride’s 6-pointer in the second stanza decided the fate of the contest, as both teams struggled to score any try, though try scoring opportunities were created. Second half was riddled with errors and ill-discipline for both sides.

After a cliffhanger showdown with the Port Moresby Vipers last weekend, Mioks have regrouped and bounced back into the winner’s circle with a dominant victory. Aside from the draw/tie with the Vipers, Mioks have yet to taste a defeat this season.

Meanwhile, the Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup has one final round to complete its regular rounds for the 2023 season. Round 16 will conclude the regular rounds and the top 6 teams will be qualified to play in the finals.

The EPG Enga Mioks will take on the PRK Gulf Isou in Lae, while the EMK Sepik Pride will face the Bintangor Goroka Lahanis in Port Moresby to wrap up the regular rounds. Both matches will be played on Sunday (August 6th, 2023).
