The Theodist MBB Marlins pulled off an upset 5-0 win against the undefeated SWG TSI Valley Hunters during the Pepsi Capital Rugby Union round 11 Premier Men’s Division clash on Saturday, June 28th, 2025, at Bava Park.
It was a battle of David versus Goliath, where Gerehu’s valiant MBB Marlins not only delivered a boilover but also gave the invincible Valley Hunters from Ensisi Valley their first loss of the 2025 CRU season.
This blockbusting top-of-the-table fixture lived up to its billing, with both teams rising to the task by showcasing physical and intense rugby contest in the early proceedings. The points came begging for the two sides but they failed to capitalize, deadlocking at nil-all in the break.
The arm wrestle continued after the interval, as the ladder-leaders and second-placed Marlins grappled for possession to open up the game. As the match reached its climax in the final quarter, Marlins scored a match-winner to snap the Hunters' winning streak.
The reigning champions (Valley Hunters) shot themselves in the foot with poor ball security. They were also resting on their laurels as the resurgent Theodist-sponsored MBB Marlins came with a purpose to deliver the biggest upset of the season.
MBB Marlins coach Rawali Bokuik expected this blockbuster to be physical and brutal, noting it was similar to a grand final and stating that they came prepared to match the might of the high-flying Frank Genia-coached Valley Hunters.
“We knew this game was going to be tough, so we trained for it. The intensity of the game was like a grand final and we are only in the middle of the round. We were not expecting this win, but we worked for it,” coach Bokuik said.
“We came into the game, knowing that facing the Valley Hunters was our litmus test for the grand final. We wanted to know if we were ready for the grand final, and we actually showed that we are prepared to play in the finals.
“How we played today (Saturday, June 28) tested our tenacity, courage and discipline on the field. I’m excited for the win and give credit to the players. The way we performed was exceptional, but there’s still room for improvement.”
This crucial victory over the defending champions boosted the Marlins’ hopes of fighting for the coveted title. The Theodist-sponsored side will have a bye this weekend and meet the Ruswin Crusaders next weekend.
