Marlins edge out Harlequins

The Theodist MBB Marlins overcame the Harlequins with a 17-12 victory in the Pepsi Capital Rugby Union (CRU) first-ever Super Round Men’s Premier Grade clash on Saturday, 4 July 2026, at Bava Park. 

Sitting 3rd and 4th respectively on the ladder, the Marlins and Harlequins strutted their stuff, aiming for the 4 competition points and fighting to cement their spots in the top 4 of the men’s premier grade division.

After almost 20 minutes of intense battle, the Harlequins scored two tries with one successful conversion, while the Marlins bagged an unconverted try, trailing the jesters of Bava Park on 12-5 at the interval.

The match turned physical in the second half as the two sides wrestled for dominance. However, the Marlins tightened their defence, scoring 2 tries to prevail over the determined Harles. 

MBB Marlins coach Rawali Bokuik said they started poorly in the first half, but regrouped in the second half to steal the win from the Harlequins.

“I think it’s not what we wanted in the first half, knowing that this was a top 4 clash,” he explained.

“We were also suffering psychologically, so that's why we made forced passes, which resulted in errors. 

“Though we had like 80% of the ball, we could not capitalize on it. We had to work hard in the second half to beat the Harlequins.”  

Mr. Bokuik was happy with the victory, but admitted that there’s still room for improvement, especially around the ruck area.  

The Marlins’ mentor stressed the importance of preparation and team bonding, noting that they needed to win the next two matches against the Juggernauts and Uni Piggies to secure the top 2 position. 

“I told the boys that we had to win this round and prepare ourselves against the Juggernauts and Piggies to chase the top 2 spot,” he said.

“We are not going to relax. We need the bonus points because in the first rounds, we did not get those 2 bonus points, so we needed this win.” 

Coach Bokuik expressed his thoughts on the inaugural Super Round concept: “It’s great. I hope it’s hosted every year. This is a really good round that brings together all the teams, sponsors, and fans to enjoy the rugby spectacle.”
