Lae Tennis Unearthing Raw Talents

Updated: Nov 23, 2024

The Lae Tennis Club continues to unearth raw talents through its recently introduced Junior Tennis Development Program in Lae, Morobe Province.

Results have been showing off with its new juniors stepping up to the challenge at the Lae Golf Club’s Tennis courts in their 2024 LTC Team Tournament 2-Doubles & Singles.

A second tournament for its season, corporate teams were registered in three divisions with talents having fair exposure in playing against senior tennis players at the club.

LTC president Glenn Cabasug said it was great to see a lot of juniors participating in their night competition, competing against adults and amongst themselves.

“As part of our Junior Development Program, we encourage our juniors to join to further develop their skills through weekly match play," Cabasug said.

“It builds their confidence and it clearly shows their willingness to go for their shots, attack the net, and run down every ball.

“It is also evident to see their improvement as some have started to beat other adult players, whom they couldn't been in the earlier rounds.

“We are very proud of all our juniors who have given their time during the night comp and their respective parents who have been very supportive."

Additionally, the Lae Tennis Club’s development program has helped identify talents of which a few have gone on to represent the country in the last two years.

Two more tennis players, in the likes of Macklyn Meninga and Irene Jose have been identified and will make their debut representing LTC and PNG in the 2025 West Pacific Regional Championship in Fiji next January.

Meanwhile, the doubles finals were played on Monday evening with Bismarck and Lae Biscuit competing in Division A, while the Express Freight MGT took on Dr. Vincent Dental Haus team in Division B, and in Division C saw Panamex take on Paradise Garments.

The final result of the grand final will be determined through their singles matches later this weekend.
