Rising PNG kickboxer Sylvester Kundi clinched the top fighter of the Kumite “Last Man Standing” Quarterfinals tournament held on Sunday, 28 June 2026, at Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Center in Port Moresby.
Kundi made his debut in the Last Man Standing series, showing composure in the ring. He won the elimination heats 1 and 2 in Goroka, claimed the quarterfinal in Port Moresby, and advanced to the semifinal.
Though he has been involved in kickboxing for nine years, the Last Man Standing event was his inaugural appearance, quickly establishing himself as a fighter to beat, particularly in the 70kg division.
Originally from Milwarip in the newly created Mendi Central District, Southern Highlands Province, he fought for the Western Highlands Kickboxing Association, proudly representing both provinces and his local club.
Kundi stole the show in the 70kg division, displaying enthusiasm, athleticism, and determination in the ring. He not only became victorious in his division but also secured the tournament's top honors.
The talented fighter said he was overwhelmed with the victory, thanking his coaching staff, family, and fans for their support, looking forward to winning the semifinal and advancing to the big dance.
“This was my first time to compete in the Last Man Standing event in Port Moresby, so I’m very excited to win the fight in my division and also claim the fighter of the tournament,” he expressed.
“I want to thank the Mt Hagen Kickboxing Association under President Linstan Andy Supeke’s leadership, the sponsors, fans, and especially my family, who have been very supportive in my career since day one.
“I am glad that I took part in this tournament and won two trophies, so I now look forward to competing in the semifinal and hopefully, make it to the grand final.”
Despite lacking adequate funding support and proper training facilities, the promising kickboxer utilized whatever resources he had at his disposal and prepared himself well for the tourney, entering the ring with confidence and stamping his authority.
“A journey that began with a sponsorship struggle turned into a fruitful mission filled with courage, commitment, and victory,” Western Highlands Kickboxing Association President Linstan Andy Supeke commented on Kundi.
“Every fighter has a story beyond the ring, and Sylvester Kundi’s story is one of determination and belief. The road was not easy. There were challenges, uncertainties, and moments when the dream seemed difficult to achieve.
“But instead of giving up, he continued to push forward with discipline, passion, and the heart of a true champion.
“The fight was never only about winning a medal or a title. It was about representing the Western Highlands Kickboxing Association, honoring the people who supported the vision, and proving that dedication can overcome obstacles.”
The Southern Highlander now shifts his focus to the upcoming semifinal event, which will be hosted on 30 August 2026, in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province.
