King’s Baton Relay begins its PNG Tour

The Governor General of Papua New Guinea, Sir Bob Dadae, officially launched the 2026 Commonwealth Games King’s Baton Relay at the Government House in Konedobu on Thursday, 8th January 2026.

His Majesty, King Charles III, launched the King’s Baton Relay on March 10, 2025, with the Baton traveling through the Americas, Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, Oceania, and is now on the shores of PNG.

The relay began in Port Moresby, National Capital District, passing through Hanuabada village and other areas of the city before continuing its journey to East New Britain this morning.

The 2026 King's Baton Relay in Papua New Guinea (PNG) will cover the National Capital District (NCD) and East New Britain Province ahead of the Commonwealth Games in July in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Vice Regal highlighted the significance of the event, emphasizing: “It is with great honor and deep sense of national pride that I welcome you all to the official launch of the King’s Baton Relay in PNG.

“This occasion marks a significant moment for our nation as we once again take our place within the shared journey of the Commonwealth; a journey that brings together nations and peoples through sport, culture, and enduring values.”

In addition, the PNG Olympic Committee President, Emma Waiwai, said: “Each time the baton touches our shores, it connects us to the Commonwealth family and affirms our standing within a global community.

“Everywhere it goes, it will highlight the unique spirit of our people, our resilience, our cultural richness, our generosity, and our deep love for sport.

“The King’s Baton carries with it a message for our young people that their dreams can take them anywhere.”

It initially began as the Queen’s Baton Relay in 1958 but was renamed the King's Baton Relay after Queen Elizabeth II's passing.

The event has been a core tradition since the 1958 Cardiff Games and is considered the Commonwealth Games equivalent of the Olympic Torch Relay.

The purpose of the King's Baton Relay is to build excitement for the upcoming Commonwealth Games by connecting communities across the Commonwealth nations and carrying a personal message from the Head of the Commonwealth to the athletes.

The relay is designed as a visual celebration of the shared ideals and diversity of all the Commonwealth nations and territories, using the power of sport to bring people together.
