Island Sports Academy Starts Holiday Sports Program

The Island Sports Academy (ISA) launched a Holiday Sports Program for junior development, especially beginners, on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at the John Guise Stadium.

The program focuses on teaching junior participants the fundamentals of rugby and soccer, including basic rugby techniques such as grip and carry, catch and pass, and various ways of kicking the ball in soccer.

The camp is scheduled during school term breaks, providing children with an additional learning opportunity for sports while on holiday.

Vakai Lavett, the Founder of the Island Sports Academy, stated that this program enables kids to develop basic skills in soccer and rugby as they grow older.

"This is a holiday program offering coaching to juniors aged between 10 and 16 years old," said Vakai Lavett.

Starting with 8 kids, Mr. Lavett mentioned that interest has grown, and they are expecting more kids to join the program next week.

"Some schools will have their holiday next week, so we expect many children who have registered for the program to attend next week," said Lavett.

Mr. Lavett is a certified coach who firmly believes the programs will help kids master the basics to help them at an elite level, with national coaches.

"The soccer coaches are qualified, and I partner with them to help run the clinics."

More so, Lavett was with the NRL bids for PNG NRL as a team manager last year where they trained under 14 and 16-year-olds.

"From my experience with last year's NRL Bid program, I see that teaching those who are 16 years old is late to learn," he said.

Lavett started the program this year in March with his Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) for kids ages 5-12.
