UPNG School of Law (SOL) smashed Uni Chiefs 48_31 at a thrilling grand final
match in the Unity Sports Basketball grand final play off at UPNG Basketball Court
yesterday.
All eyes were on Uni Chiefs as a new team on the court and as well as the team that
will travel to New Zealand next month for the Oceania 3x3 Tournament.
However, team SOL came out victorious and standing strong as the reigning
champions. SOL is also the 2022 Basketball champions and they are able to
maintain it fiercely.
SOL did this by setting a defensive pace and non-stops dunks every time they get
possession of the ball in the 1 st and 2 nd quarter of the game. SOL coordinating skills
was top notch! When it came to quarter 3, SOL was leading with 37 and Uni Chiefs
at 21. When final quarter slid in, it was a race against time for the Chiefs to catch up
and to equal the score but, SOL stood their ground and sunk more goals into the
basket giving them the victorious ending.
UPNG BA President Sepu Samson and UPNG Chiefs captain-3 rd year Bachelor of
Business Management student said although they didn’t get the win, it was a good
competition for them.
“It was a really good competition which we expected to see and they gave us a good
one. We had a tough competition in the last two days and were able to get the balls
rolling to get us this far to the grand final. I really appreciate it that they gave us a
good competition and It was a really good feeling. It will set us well for our
preparation for our competition next month in New Zealand”, said Uni Chiefs Captain
Sepu Samson.
“They got the win but for us we don’t take it as a lose but we are taking that as a
stepping stone to stand on and work on the areas that we need to improve on,” said
Samson.
“I am actually happy that we gave them the competition. They are a very competitive
team, a lot of great players. I think it’s just one or two things that we did to outsmart
them in terms of defense and other things,” said SOL Captain and 4 th year LLB
Student Peggile Nema.
Meanwhile, PNG Basketball Federation representative and Hoops4Health officer
Jordan Baxter Sere who officiated at the game complimented the two teams and
SOL for their win and said that SOL won because they have always been in the
game so it’s just natural for them to win. He also added that PNG Basketball is
happy to be there and is looking to patriciate again in the Unity Sports next year.
