Gomore villagers welcomed World Cup Trophy

The Gomore villagers in Rigo District of Central Province had the honor of welcoming the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s Cricket World Cup Trophy on Thursday, 20th July, 2023.

The trophy was on its international tour to Papua New Guinea. Rigo of Central Province was chosen as the stage village for the ceremony. After that, the cup will continue its tour to other areas.

According to the Ward Member, Buri Magari, it was a proud moment for him and his people for such a historic event. He appreciated PNG Cricket for giving them the opportunity to host the event.

“It’s a cup that is celebrated around the world, so we are all excited to celebrate the cup.

“As the London Mission Society arrived first in Rigo, cricket was one of the main sports that were introduced.

“Therefore, cricket is the main sport played in the area apart from rugby,” Buri Magari stated.

There were traditional dancers from surrounding villages, gathering at Gomore to celebrate the historic event.

Kwalimurumbu Village dancers have welcomed the cup with traditional dances. Everyone was also entertained by Gibobada Dancers, performing the popular SIAGE DANCE.

Former Barramundi, Bill Baroa from Gababa and Kopi Kopi from Gomore have welcomed the trophy bearer into the ceremonial area.

The event coincided with the promotional cricket match between the combined Sinaugoro Cricket Team vs PNG Cricket Academy.

Significant figures who were at the ceremony were:

● Hon. Buri Magari

● ICC Representative Mr. Max Abbott

● CEO PNG Sports Foundation Albert Veratau

It will be a promising qualifier, as the host (Barramundis) will take on Vanuatu in the second decider, following Japan versus the Philippines in the first challenge.
