Genanama claims Hevea Cup

The Genanama team of Abau District, Central Province, edged the Kerowagi Spicy of Simbu Province with a 10-6 victory in the Grand Final of the 2023 Hevea Cup and Wellness Expo (HCWE) Nines Tournament on Saturday, November 11, at Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby to claim the title.

Even though it was Genanama’s first time to participate in the tourney, they played with ease and confidence, making their presence known and clinching their maiden title.

The team from Abau District defied all odds stacked against them, weathered the storm and sailed courageously to the finishing line, claiming their first title.

Genanama’s coach, Kumu Gairo, was impressed with his boys. He said that his team had traveled long distances on bad road conditions to vie for the title. Their sacrifice and hard work had paid off when they won the two-day tourney.

“I am excited for the boys. They played really well in the tournament. We have made a lot of sacrifices to come and take part in the Hevea Cup, so I am happy that we got the job done,” coach Gairo said.

Coach Gairo and Genanama are looking forward to defending their title next year. The tournament will be bigger and better next year, according to Director David Westley.
