Four-City Kickboxing Club in the notorious suburb of Morata in Port Moresby’s North-West Electorate received timely support from the National Capital District Commission's Sports Division yesterday (May 21st, 2025), at Morata 4.
NCDC Sports Coordinator for Port Moresby North-West Simon Nuabo presented the kickboxing equipment to the founder of Four-City Kickboxing Club Vero Kalesi, witnessed by PNG Kickboxing Federation President Stanley Nandex, and newly appointed NCD Kickboxing Association President, Thomas Kagili.
Mr. Nuabo urged the parents to support their children, encouraging them to get involved in kickboxing, boxing, and other sports of their liking.
”If you give support to your children, they will make a difference. Talking only will not change their behavior. We must support and encourage them,” he stressed.
"The kids can pursue not only kickboxing but whatever sports they dream of playing and becoming good at it.
“We can use sports to address social issues in the community. We must talk less and do more action to help these kids.”
Drawing an example from PNG’s iconic kickboxer Stanley Nandex - dubbed the ‘Head Hunter’ - Nuabo challenged the youths and children to be disciplined, work hard, and follow in the footsteps of Nandex, or make their names.
PNG Kickboxing Federation President Stanley Nandex urged the emerging kickboxers and the parents to take ownership, stating, ”Because of the age level, the kids will need guidance and support from you. I want you (parents) to take ownership.
“We will do our part and we urge you all to do your part as well. My job as the head of the federation (PNGKBF) is to help and empower the associations, ensuring that the programs must be carried out effectively to produce quality fighters.”
The Four-City Kickboxing Club was established by Vero earlier this year. With the increasing number of criminal activities, she took it upon herself to initiate this club, purposely to address crime rates in the community by engaging the youths to take part in the martial arts sport.
The club runs different mentoring and coaching programs for youth and children below the age of 13, with 106 aspiring fighters registering themselves to become part of the club. The club has made great strides over the last three months.
“I’ve seen law-and-order issues going out of hand in the community, so I decided to start the Four-City Kickboxing Club in February to keep the youths engaged and help them stay out of trouble,” Vero said.
“The youths here have the potential to excel in sports. I am using my own resources to assist them in fulfilling their dreams, and also keep them away from criminal activities.
“I see that kickboxing has the power to unite the youths and give them a second chance in life. I’m doing my part to help them become productive boys and good citizens.”
Mrs. Kalesi also encouraged mothers and young girls to partake in the kickboxing sessions, especially for self-defense purposes.
Meanwhile, Mr. Nandex revealed that the PNG Kickboxing Federation would host a Club Championship on July 15 to select the best fighters to participate in the upcoming PNG Games.
