First Game-First win for EMK Sepik Pride


In its maiden appearance in the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup Round One, EMK Sepik Pride beaten Gulf Isou 14-8 at Santos National Football Stadium (NFS) in Port Moresby yesterday.

A very intense game as well as all eyes were on the new boys as they fought to defend themselves against the experienced Gulf Isou.


The Gulf team proved very tough in the first-half holding the Sepik Pride scoreless, with them taking the lead with a 2 points from a penalty kick.

The crowds were on the edge of their seats as the defence were put on by both teams were fierce counting down to half-time with 2_0.


Isou claimed another try in the second-half by right center number 3 Eliakim Lukara, an heart wrenching moment for the Pride that put the score at Isou 8_Pride 0.

The breaking point for Sepik Pride came when Pride’s number three (3) Elizah Iwa scored their decisive try equalling the points to 8-8 at 13min before full-time. It was the moment that the anticipated EMK Sepik Pride supporters have been waiting for!


Finally, the winning try for Sepik Pride came in the 8th minutes before full-time when number five (5) and man of the match John Paul scored placing them at 12 and Isou-8. The kick was then successful giving them the winning point 14-8.


Meanwhile, in an interview with EMK Sepik Pride Head Coach Joe Bruno, he said that the win was ordinary for him as it is not a grand final saying that the season has just begun and the future is unpredictable.


“Its normal for me, unless it’s a grand final then I’ll be happy, because its only a round one and anything can happen in round two (2), three (3) or four (4)”, said Coach Bruno.
