Dockers claimed POM AFL Women’s Championship

The build-up excitement reached its climax when the Grand Final of the Moni Plus Port Moresby Australian Football League (Moni Plus POM AFL) Women’s competition kicked off over the weekend.

Colts Oval, the home of AFL football, witnessed the highly-anticipated Women’s Grand Final clash between the TSI Lamana Dockers and the Bismark Maritime West Eagles on Saturday (19th August).

Lamana Dockers displayed a strong performance, defeating West Eagles with a 14-13 score-line to claim the POMAFL Women’s Championship glory. Dockers bagged one goal, eight behind to finish with 14 points and West Eagles had two goals and one behind, finishing short by a point.

After falling in the hands of West Eagles in the Preliminary Final, Dockers regrouped and came back with a rejuvenated energy to blow off Gerehu Magpies in a do-or-die contest, and successfully secured a spot in the decider for a rematch against West Eagles.

Despite losing to the West Eagles in the Semi-Final, Dockers have risen to the occasion and redeemed themselves by beating the West Eagles. It was a sweet revenge.

The Grand Final Rematch was as thrilling as the Semi Final, in which West Eagles edged them out in a competitive game.

“We came through minor premiers and then we played West Eagles in the semi-finals and we lost to West Eagles. And then I told my girls not to put their hopes down because we have one more game to go. We can put our heads together and patch up the things that need to be fixed,” said Coach Stanis Ponda.

“Last week, we played Gerehu Magpies, we won and I told my girls to keep going, and now in the grand final, we played the West Eagles again.”

Coach Ponda commended his team, saying that all the players from the different positions played remarkably and performed exceptionally well.

“All of them performed well and they deserve all the credits,” said Coach Ponda.
