Abau District of Central Province has missed out on the PNG Games Athletics trial for Team Central, which was hosted over the weekend (9th-10th September) at Sir John Guise Outdoor Stadium in Port Moresby, NCD due to transportation issues.
The final selection trials for Athletics Team Central saw almost all the districts participate, from Goilala, Kairuku, Rigo, and Hiri-Koiari.
However, due to transportation issues, Abau District couldn’t send their athletes for the trials, as transportation was one of the main challenges for the people of Central Province.
“Unfortunately, Abau couldn’t make it due to transportation issues,” said Hiri-Koiari Sports Officer and Central Provincial Sports Coordinator (Care-taker) Tanya Seni.
The athletics trials saw athletes, including their para-athletes, competing for a spot to represent Athletics Team Central in the upcoming 8th PNG Games, which will be held in Port Moresby from 6th to 16th December 2023.
“Amongst our athletes are our para-athletes as well who will be taking part in the PNG Games in both field and track events,” said Tanya Seni.
More so, one of the issues that they have is the sporting facilities.
“We don’t have facilities, especially for our athletes to train. We only have them train at schools. When we have events like this, we come here to run a trial and then make final selections,” Seni said.
“Each district conducted their trials in their own districts, make their own selections, and then they come here for Provincial trials,” she said.
The trials started with track events on Friday and ended with field events and some track events on Saturday.
“We have other codes that already have their teams, especially the ball games, weightlifting, powerlifting and boxing,” she added.
“This is the code that we didn’t have our trial and this is our last. For the other codes, we have already submitted to the PNG Games Organizing Committee”
Meanwhile, Team Central is rooting to regain their title as the champion, which they won in the 7th PNG Games held in Kimbe, West New Britain Province.
