The Gas Resources Central Dabaris winger and try scoring machine, Douglas Pirika, had scored all four tries in the main fixture of the triple-header round 3 game of the Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup on Sunday, April 28th, 2024, leading the Dabaris to a 22-18 victory over Moni Plus NCDC Vipers at the Santos National football Stadium in Port Moresby.
Pirika was awarded with the Man-of-the-Match, registering Dabaris’ first win of the 2024 season as they wrapped up round three of the semi-professional competition. The Dabaris flyer lived up to the expectations of his coach, Steve Gunua.
“Douglas is my last bullet, especially when it comes to a game that has close margins. I always remind him that he can use his individual skill, especially his speed to score, so this one is not a surprise to me. He stepped up his game and executed the plan really well,” coach Gunua praised Pirika’s impressive performance.
Gunua added that Douglas was part of the Hunters training squad, but he did not make the final 30-men squad. Douglas still trains on Mondays and Tuesdays with the Hunters and with the Dabaris on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Gunua said Douglas' experience with the Hunters had boosted his team.
“I’m really happy with Douglas and the Hunters as well, as Douglas’ training with them has really boosted Douglas and he has brought that energy to my team,” Gunua said.
The Dabaris will take on the Wamp Nga Mt. Hagen Eagles at John Ambane Oval, Minj, in Jiwaka on Saturday, May 4th.
