2023 FedEx National Championships to be held this weekend

Taurama Aquatic Centre swimming pool is set to come alive this weekend as Papua New Guinea Swimming Inc. will be hosting the 2023 FedEx National Championships from Saturday to Sunday (9th-10th) September at Taurama, NCD.

The event is sure to be interesting as it will feature some of the best swimming champions from BASC and LASC coming together for a two-day moment of all four strokes to be contested over 4 sessions.

Some of the competing swimmers include the current swimming favorites Georgia Leigh-Vele, Nathaniel Noka, and Josh Tarere, among others.

“The championships will see 97 enthusiastic swimmers from Boroko Armature Swimming Club and LASC coming together for 2 days of unforgettable moments,” said PNG Swimming President Elizabeth Wells.

“It is hoped that we will see many inspirational performances from our swimmers, (age group, open and masters) as they take to the water in competition and many personal best times set and records broken in what will be an event where sporting abilities will shine through allowing our swimmers, in all age groups, to feel success and enjoy the spirit of competition,” said Wells.

“The championship will also provide an opportunity for swimmers to swim qualifying times to gain a place on the BSP National Kundu Aquatic Excellence Squads - Junior and Intermediate, Silver and Gold, and the Kundu Target Squads: Bronze, Silver and Gold, and Platinum. This is a very important competition for our athletes vying for a position on TEAM PNG, the traveling team to the 2023 Pacific Games,” she said.

She also expressed her gratitude to all those involved in the preparation and running of the FedEx Championships in an efficient and professional manner. She said that all these have been possible by the cooperation of many parties.

“We thank the many technical officials under the direction of our World Aquatics Referee John Agovai and Starter Albert Vigil; our major sponsor PNG AIR FREIGHT, under its FedEx brand, and the Organizers in both PNGSI and Boroko Swimming Club for their great efforts in guaranteeing the quality of the event,” she added.
