Morobe Rugby, "Where the PNG Pukpuks breed"
By PRISCILLA HARRY SportsTok MAgazine | Issue #
Competitors is what schoolboys’ rugby union in Morobe province hopes for in 2020 and beyond.
PNG Rugby Development manager Robin Tarere when asked about the status of junior rugby development said it was resourceful to start up junior national championships throughout PNG.
By looking back at the legends in representatives in the PNG Pukpuks team, alas the development of the code has been consistent four decades ago however it is has diminished for the past three years with the head of code once in jeopardy but picked off well in 2019.
Off course, changing the phase of a sporting code or a certain sport often embarks on youths and that is what PNG Pukpuks great Tarere and the Supporters Club of Rugby Union Morobe (SCRUM) has worked to achieve its aim in junior development in the code of rugby sevens union since its inception 25 years ago.
The team participated in the Kramer Ausenco Brothers sevens tourney in November last year as their first tour to Port Moresby to execute their plan to play against some of the top and current sevens international players.
Tarere said their exposure will give them the boost to be strong, along with their education and their career with the aim to represent PNG one day. The Morobe Schoolboys team this year are on their hay moments to with the objective to vie for a strong competition in attending the Fiji, Nadi Rugby Sevens school carnival next in November 2020.
Most have come and gone and have played for the national team and we will continue to support groom these young players. But as far as PNG Rugby Union is concerned, plans and calendar for the event this year will be sanctioned and rolled out individually. However, it is true that junior rugby development program is the only program that can change the phase of performance for the next generation. It’s all about starting small, teaching, training and basically seeing the youths grow in the sport.
