Dreams come true for Apia
BY ELSIE PASINGAN SportsTok Magazine | Issue #
The name Apia raises bells as it is Samoa’s capital City where currently the 16th version of the South Pacific Games is being held.
Apia for many in basketball back in PNG also knows what it is. It is a name given to one of a top basketball player in the country who is also the son of the current PNG Women’s national coach Moi Muri.
Interestingly, the name Apia came about from one of the most memorable trip coach Moi Muri had when he first represented PNG in the men’s basketball team to Apia in Samoa back in 1987.
Muri who spoke vividly during the 2015 XV Pacific Games held back in Port Moresby where he met a long time friend from Samoa said it was a trip he will never ever forget in his life.
Those moments in Samoa back then is undeniable the most treasured moments for Muri even to this day.
Interestingly his children who are now grown up kids have followed the footstep of their father with three of the siblings currently in the men and women’s national team participating in the basketball challenge in the current 16th Pacific Games held in Samoa.
“No one thought Apia would be as cool as any other kid growing up in a notorious place like Kaugere. But I believe most of these kids have changed because of the influence basketball and sport in particular has for the people living in that part of the city,” said PNG Premier Men’s Basketball League chairman Alain Boussoungou.
“That is why Apia is a very cool player as he does not complain but concentrates on his game. Apia and other player Moses Lune are two cool players and it’s that reason they will always represent PNG and continue to be a good players so long as they disciplines themselves,” Boussoungou said.
Apia when asked about this said he was delighted to play for the country and go there to Samoa is like a dream come true.
Not many athlete would have that history but for Apia, this trip to the XVI Pacific Games will certainly go down as one of his best and memories he will always live to share with his close friends, families and loved ones.
