Among few Papua New Guineans who have exceled in sports in the western countries, Hewago Ace Oea is one of them who wish to find meaning in life through playing AFL (Aussie Rules) in Australia. Though Ace is young and he is expected to be in his early 20s, the Gulf lad mastered AFL through the NiuKick program now sponsored by Paradise Foods Ltd here in Port Moresby.
The Em Nau Niukick program which is an annually program run by AFL PNG targets children in PNG in the age group between 5 and 15 years of old. Ace who is now making waves in Gold Coast, Queensland passed through this program and now he is a step closer to accomplish his dream to be the first PNG to make name for himself in the A-Grade AFL Clubs in Australia.

Ace got some natural ability to play footy and I must say that he has got what it takes to be the best AFL player in PNG and in the Pacific. He is like a family member to his guardian. Beside the family obligations, Ace concentrate more on his training and he is committed to footy as he believes that it was the sports that pave his way up and granted access for him to travel to places like Australia and to live there comfortably. “These PNG kids have the chances to be part of the youth Teams and occasionally takes part in the Queensland National championship challenges that is staged annually that attracts teams from the other Pacific Island Teams and a team from PNG too,” Drew said. Ace who was just 16 in 2017 during the International Cup tournament in New Melbourne, Australia– was named best on ground with a comprehensive display, utilizing lightning speed and tremendous ball skills. “It was amazing to run out at the MCG for the first time. I’ll be back in three years to make it three consecutive titles
Now he hopes to make it the 2020 PNG Mozzie side to add another flavor and this time, Ace targets to kick two goals.
